Colchester in a Day, Art & Culture - afternoon into evening


2pm Arrive in Colchester - Minories
The Minories Art Gallery is a professional contemporary art gallery run in conjunction with Colchester School of Art, Design & Media and housed in a Listed Georgian building.
The gardens, together with the folly within them, provide a delightful setting to appreciate the building and art work all with the option of a delicious lunch or snack from the onsite Love Bistro.

4pm Shopping
After leaving The Minories your group may like some time to explore Colchester's compact yet diverse shopping area. Included amongst the wealth of smaller specialist shops are a number which sell art and art related items including The Life Café Gallery in Culver Street West (01206 574777). The Ceramic Life Cafe (01206 364666) offers people the opportunity to be creative by putting their own designs on the blank ceramics provided.

6pm Supper
Enjoy an early supper in one of Colchester's many excellent eating places. The Town offers everything from ethnic cuisine to bars and brasseries. If your group are going on to the Mercury Theatre why not try Orientation, specialising in seafood and Shanghai cuisine(01206 368100)  and located within the theatre itself. 8pm Entertainment
Colchester is fortunate in being able to offer groups a wide range of high quality evening entertainment to suit all tastes. The award winning Mercury Theatre (01206 573948) stages an exciting and varied programme, much of which is produced in-house by the acclaimed Mercury Theatre Company. In addition the Mercury regularly plays host to touring ballet and opera productions, comedy, jazz and popular music. Housed in St Mary's Church, Colchester Arts Centre (01206 500900) also attracts many of the big names in comedy and jazz and is the area's foremost venue for folk. Charter Hall (01206 282020) is a flexible space that can stage everything from full orchestras like The Academy of St Martin in the Fields to one-man shows by comedians like Jim Davidson.
